Bat Walk with Red Rock Audubon

04/16/2026 06:30 PM - 09:00 PM PT

Description

Join Red Rock Audubon's Iris Lautermilch to discover the nighttime world of Ash Springs at Red Rock Canyon on a guided Bat Walk, an engaging interpretive program that brings visitors up close to the fascinating lives of our desert’s only flying mammals. As the sun sets over the cliffs and canyons, participants will join a Red Rock Audubon guide for a 1-mile hike to observe bats emerging to forage and to learn how these remarkable animals shape the Mojave Desert ecosystem.  Visitors will explore bat behavior and echolocation while listening to real-time acoustic detections of bats navigating the night sky. They will also gain insight into ongoing conservation efforts that protect vital bat habitat throughout the National Conservation Area. The link for walk registration is: https://rrcactivities.timetap.com/#/

Meet Iris Lautermilch

My name is Iris Lautermilch (they/them), and I’m motivated by conservation as a community effort. I’m an early-career environmentalist with experience at national wildlife refuges, Canadian limnological research projects, and ecological leadership and volunteer roles on the East Coast. In addition to hands-on restoration work supporting native and vulnerable species, I enjoy rucking, moonlight hikes, reading, and long, meandering conversations. Inspired by my imaginative grandfathers, I’m always up for a good campfire story.
